Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi held a meeting today, Friday (10/9/2020), with officials from the federal government and the Kurdistan regional government, concerning an agreement to restore stability and normalize the situation in Sinjar district in Nineveh Governorate, in the presence of The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq Jeanine Plasschaert.
His Excellency confirmed the completion of the agreement on the administrative and security files in Sinjar district, which would accelerate and facilitate the return of the IDP's to the district. His Excellency indicated that the agreement took place in an atmosphere of fraternal understanding within the framework of the federal state. And that it will have good resonance at the local and international level. It will be the beginning of solving the problems of all the ethnically and religiously diverse regions in Iraq.
His Excellency stated that the law is sufficient to build the basis for a strong state dominated by citizenship, and that fosters religious and ethnic diversity. It is a principle that we will not abandon as it is related to the future of Iraq and its unity, stressing that the delay in restoring stability to Sinjar was at the expense of the people who suffered from Daesh terrorist gangs, and suffer from a lack of services.
His Excellency pledged that the government agencies will make every effort to proceed with the search for the Yazidi kidnappers and kidnappers.
Mr. Al-Kadhimi confirmed that the federal government, in coordination with the regional government, will play its primary role in order to properly implement the agreement, to ensure its success, in cooperation with the people of Sinjar first. His Excellency underscored the government's keenness and seriousness for Sinjar to be free of armed groups, whether local or foreign from outside the borders, assured that security in western Nineveh falls within the powers of the federal government.
His Excellency reaffirmed that Iraq refuses to use its lands by armed groups to attack its neighbors, whether the Turkish neighbor or the Iranian neighbor and the rest of our neighbors.
His Excellency the Prime Minister expressed his thanks to the United Nations Mission in Iraq for its support of the government's efforts regarding the issue of the return of all IDP's and the restoration of stability to their areas. His Excellency also commanded the delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government that helped in reaching this agreement. His Excellency also appreciated the efforts of government officials who exerted their efforts in order to achieve this agreement and bring justice to our Yazidi people.
The agreement to restore stability in the Sinjar district includes many administrative, security and service points. The administrative aspect is agreed upon with the Kurdistan Regional Government and Nineveh Governorate, taking into consideration the demands of the people of the judiciary.
Everything in the security filed falls within the scope and powers of the federal government in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government. As for the service side, it will be the responsibility of a joint committee between the federal government, the regional government and Nineveh Governorate.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq Jeanine Plasschaert expressed her happiness for reaching this agreement.
Plasschaert stressed that it is a historic day for Sinjar after the massacres that its sons experienced at the hands of Daesh gangs, and the hardships they suffered after the expulsion of Daesh. She said that it is a real beginning for the return of the IDP's to their areas, and that the United Nations is ready to support stability in this region.
